Abstract

This text aims to present the stages and results achieved with the workshop “The Maranhão newspaper ‘O Archivo’ (1846) as a source for teaching History”. The private school “Espaço da Sabedoria” in João Lisboa – Maranhão was chosen and the workshop was carried out with students of the 5th year of Elementary School, in the afternoon. We sought, through the analysis of the newspaper “O Archivo”, from 1846, to work with students on some aspects of the history of the press, especially the one from Maranhão, on some events reported in that newspaper that reveal elements of the historical, political or socioeconomic context experienced in that period. of the 1850s and, still, the discussion of the newspaper as a source. To do so, initially, we carried out readings of authors who approach the press during the 19th century and the newspaper as a source for teaching History in order to have the creation of a theoretical basis. Based on this study, we held a workshop on the aforementioned newspaper, highlighting it as a source for teaching History in Elementary School. In the workshop, by addressing the role of women in this context and period through the newspaper, the students were

able to understand the process of construction of historical knowledge in a theoretical- practical and, above all, didactic and pleasurable way.
