Vestígios do sublime gótico na poesia de Mariana Luz

Abstract

The sublime gothic is a specific form of the sublime that manifests itself in Gothic literature and art, characterized by elements that evoke terror, admiration and a sense of wonder before the unknown and the great. In order to investigate this representation in Brazilian poetry, this research aims to analyze traces of the sublime gothic, in the poetic work Murmúrios e outros poemas (2021), of the writer Mariana Luz. This bibliographical research uses as theoretical basis the studies of Fred Botting (1996), David Punter (1996), Alexander Meireles da Silva (2010), Júlio França (2017) Maurício Menon (2007) and Noël Carroll (1999) to discuss the origins of the Gothic. In relation to the sublime, we highlight the Greek treaty On the Sublime, which was initially attributed to Dionysius Longinus and was rediscovered in the seventeenth century, and the work A philosophical investigation into the origin of our ideas of the sublime and the beautiful (1757), by Edmund Burke. The analysis of the poems of Mariana Luz demonstrates a strong presence of gothic aesthetics as a means to intensify the emotional impact, exploring dualities and extreme sensations, in other words, intrinsic aspects of man and his relationship with the world as a way to unleash the sublime. This investigation contributes to the understanding of the adaptation of the Gothic to Brazilian poetry, revealing its cultural specificities and dialogue with the sublime Burkeano.
